Last week someone asked me about tutorial/scripts for implementing a gallery in Flash that pulls information from an xml file, but also uses cookies to show the last image clicked on when you return to the gallery. Here’s what I found and for those that are not in the know, when you’re working in Flash and need to use information saved on the client’s machine, think about using the flash shared object, they’re Flash’s version of cookies and are a lot easier to access via actionscript.
Good Implementations
Slideshow Pro - How Dominey has the time to work on side projects of such excellence boggles me to no end. Good price. Great software.
Simple Viewer - Very easy to implement and a very nice implementation. Plus, it’s got my favorite price tag : Free.
Flash XML Gallery Tutorials
How to create a gallery in Flash using XML data - very nice video tutorials on the subject
Photo Gallery Using XML and Flash - A very nice tutorial from Kirupa with downloads.
Flash Shared Object
What is a local Shared Object? - Macromedia’s description.
Using local shared objects in Macromedia Flash MX - Macromedia’s tutorial
Shared Object: The Flash Cookie - another very easy to follow tutorial for those wanting to jump in.
Note to self : never use the word “very” again to describe anything. Jeez.
Thanks for the great pointers and links.
When you have users who have very tight security settings (no cookies, etc…) is the shared object a better approach than cookies?
Would a cookie have any advantage (other than the 100k limitation) on the SO?
I know that permission can be denied by right-clicking, but if the user doesn’t take time to do this, wouldn’t a small shared object be a good way to maintain a small amount of data for users who clear cookies, etc.. very often?
if you want a free full dynamic flash gallery go here : http://www.creation3d.org/galerie_dynamique/ no cookies, this is true, but this is the only free flash gallery i know
