Excellent article.
There is a slight error in the ninety ninety rule though: It should be "“The first 90% of the code accounts for the first 10% of the development time..." as far is I remember ;)

I would like to take a slightly different angle on the content of your article. The reason why design is important in business is because "Design dictates performance". This is critical because nothing can out perform its design. Computers can only run so fast, cars have top speeds, planes can only fly so high,... Everything is enabled and constrained by its design. If there is a need to exceed the performance capabilities of the existing design then a redesign is in order. Now apply that to businesses. All businesses have an inherent design just like their products, services, applications and departments. And if you don't know what your design looks like you can not know the root cause of your performance problems. It is also important to note that all designs become obsolete. Odds are if your business is underperforming then your design needs to be updated.

Really, really good article. Hits the nail right on spot. I found it very familiar when coding a crappy design, it just goes slower. You care more when the thing you create (code) looks beautiful.

This is similar to why car companies release concept cars that may never see the light of day. it's a way to invigorate and light up the passions of the guy cranking widgets on the production line. Sweet article, keep it up!

Excellent post!

This is so true. I've experienced this a lot (on both sides).

With teams that I didn't convey the confidence-- it produced a shoddy work. They subliminally see through you (words, body language) that you don't expect much and it does happen.

On the other hand, for teams I constantly motivated that they are world-class-- they exceeded expectation.

So much heartache can be saved if only we learn this. Thanks for reminding to always raise the bar. :)

Everyone needs a hug? Oki doke?
Anyway. I think this article is what we need more of, in general, from everywhere. Thanks Chris. Unfortunately, you used so many links that I have now clogged my Thursday morning reading JUST with your resources! Next time be more considerate :)

I've seen the effects of trying to design while coding up close and personal. Recently while redesigning Squaredeye.com I ran into it big time. I didn't treat myself as a client, and the project suffered hugely.

Thanks for keeping me on track.

Chris:

Thanks for cheerleading the need for design to help fuel startups and businesses. In the end it's all about money, but the journey there has to be one worth taking...I cross-posted on your piece to http://blog.innovators-network.org The Innovators Network is a non-profit dedicated to bringing technology to startups, small businesses, non-profits, venture capitalists and intellectual property experts.
