This is a really great article. I am starting to realize how opening up content to republishers will help in the long run. I now see that my content cannot continue to succeed in a silo.

This is a very cool post. I wonder whether I could translate it into spanish and post it on my site? (with due credits of course!).
I'm trying to promote web standards and, in general, "Web 2.0 mindset" at my place of work and this is an excellent document to sum it all up.

Peter, it is interesting to hear that you were able to run that much activity off of one dedicated server. That gives hope to most start up ideas. At the same time, I believe there are some services that absolutely require their own hardware. This may be due to the importance of the data and reliablitity, or because it is a such a large scale project that third party hosting is not cost effective. When dealing with hardware, technical and security concerns are not known to the common hacker, so greater expertise is needed. By creating some type of incubator, this barrier to entry could be brought down.

Another thing to consider is trust. If I want to create a mashup of two services, I have to trust that those services will continue to provide me with API's, and that they will have a good uptime. If they don't manage thier own servers, I am now trusting their hosting company as well.

Dedicated hosting solutions are definitely a cheaper alternative, but they tend to be short term solutions and still outside of the range of most Web 2.0 dabblers.

I disagree. RSS Digest easily supported its dedicated server costs even when we only took donations. Now it's become FeedDigest and we're charging for extended features (though it is still free, generally), we certainly make enough to cover dedicated server costs. You can get some pretty powerful and reliable machines on powerful networks in reliable data centers pretty cheap now. FeedDigest's infrastructure is all in Houston, and it didn't skip a beat this weekend. :)

Hosting is the really easy bit. We made it up to one million dynamic views a day on a $199 a month server. We've had to expand now, of course, but it got us where we are now.
